Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga with Chris Balser
WINTER SESSIONS

Part One: The Basics
January 24 - February 28, 2010
Part Two: The Practice
March 7 - April 11, 2010

The practice of Ashtanga yoga is a great way to cultivate physical, mental and spiritual well-being.  The combination of breath, posture, and movement cleanse, open and strengthen the body and calm the mind.  A natural desire for continued, steady practice deepens the experience of self, and brings joy and peace.

Ashtanga Yoga:  this challenging and flowing form of Hatha Yoga brings the body, mind and spirit into perfect alignment and function.  The Ashtanga Yoga practice is unique in that it combines postures (asana), Isometrics (bhandas), breath control (pranayama), focused gaze (drishti/pratyhara), and an uninterrupted sequence of postures (vinyasa) into a moving meditation that enhances self-awareness and concentration.

The Primary Series: Yoga Chikitsa, meaning "yoga therapy" in Sanskrit, is the Primary or First Series of Ashtanga yoga.  It is a specific sequence of postures designed to cleanse, purify and align the body helping to protect and rehabilitate it from injury

This 12-week introduction will provide the tools necessary to start and refine the sequence of postures that make up the Primary Series.
Students will learn techniques and modifications that make it enjoyable for everyone.
